What is Cursor on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

The Cursor AI code editor (based on VS Code) and its helper processes.

Cursor is an AI-focused code editor built on VS Code, so it uses the same Electron process layout: Renderer helpers draw windows, Plugin helpers run extensions and language tools, and the GPU helper handles graphics. Indexing your codebase for AI features can also use CPU after opening a project.

Why is Cursor using so much CPU or memory?

  • Indexing a codebase for AI features
  • Extensions and language servers working on a big project
  • Many windows or large files open
  • File watching in folders with huge numbers of files

What to do

  1. 1Wait for codebase indexing to finish
  2. 2Use Help > Open Process Explorer to see which part is busy
  3. 3Disable heavy extensions and exclude big folders from watching
  4. 4Restart Cursor

Safe to quit? Yes.

Safe to quit the app; save your files first. Quitting a single helper can crash a window.
