What is mdmclient on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Apple's device-management client; it's on every Mac but only acts if the Mac is enrolled.

mdmclient is Apple's built-in client for Mobile Device Management (MDM), which organisations use to manage work and school Macs. ManagedClient applies managed preferences and configuration profiles. These are part of every copy of macOS, so seeing them doesn't mean your Mac is being managed. To check, look at System Settings > General > Device Management (or Profiles).

Why is mdmclient using so much CPU or memory?

  • Your organisation's management server sending profiles, apps or commands
  • Checking in with a management server
  • Applying configuration profiles after an update

What to do

  1. 1Check System Settings > General > Device Management to see if any profiles are installed
  2. 2On a work or school Mac, contact your IT team about persistent activity
  3. 3If you see a profile you don't recognise on a personal Mac, review it and remove it there

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; on a managed Mac, management tasks are just delayed.
