What is PowerChime on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Plays the little chime when you plug a charger into a MacBook.

PowerChime is a tiny background app that plays the charging sound when you connect power to a Mac laptop. It does almost nothing the rest of the time.

Why is PowerChime using so much CPU or memory?

  • Rarely busy; it only works for a moment when power is connected
  • A faulty charger or cable connecting and disconnecting repeatedly can trigger it over and over

What to do

  1. 1Try a different charger or cable if the chime keeps playing
  2. 2Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

It relaunches; you might miss the charging sound once.
