What is syslogd on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

The older Apple System Log server, still used by some apps and tools to record messages.

syslogd receives and processes log messages sent through older logging interfaces. Most of macOS now uses the unified logging system (logd), but syslogd remains for compatibility. It's normally very light.

Why is syslogd using so much CPU or memory?

  • An app writing lots of messages through older logging interfaces
  • Something failing repeatedly and logging each time

What to do

  1. 1Look for another busy or crashing process at the same time
  2. 2Update the app producing the messages
  3. 3Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; some log messages may be lost.
