What is systemstats on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Gathers statistics about system power use for macOS's energy tracking.

systemstats collects and summarises statistics about power usage, which macOS uses for things like energy and battery reporting. It runs periodically in the background and can briefly use noticeable CPU while it processes data, then settles.

Why is systemstats using so much CPU or memory?

  • Periodic processing of power statistics, often after waking or being idle
  • After a macOS update

What to do

  1. 1Wait a few minutes; short spikes are normal
  2. 2Restart your Mac if it stays busy for a long time

Safe to quit? With care.

It runs again later; quitting just interrupts the current pass.
