What is trustd on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Checks that security certificates are valid, for websites, apps and secure connections.

trustd evaluates trust in certificates for every process on the Mac. When an app makes a secure (HTTPS) connection or checks a signature, trustd verifies the certificate chain and may check online whether a certificate has been revoked. It's busier when lots of secure connections are being made.

Why is trustd using so much CPU or memory?

  • Lots of new secure connections (browsers, sync apps, updates)
  • Slow or blocked access to certificate-checking servers
  • VPNs, proxies or security software that inspect HTTPS traffic

What to do

  1. 1Wait; spikes during heavy browsing or updates are normal
  2. 2Temporarily disable VPN or HTTPS-inspecting tools to compare
  3. 3Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; secure connections may fail for a moment.
