What is UniversalControl on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Lets one keyboard and mouse control nearby Macs and iPads (Universal Control).

UniversalControl powers Universal Control, the Continuity feature that lets you move your pointer and keyboard between a Mac and nearby Macs or iPads signed in to the same Apple Account. It runs in the background so devices can find each other, and it's normally light.

Why is UniversalControl using so much CPU or memory?

  • Actively controlling another device, or dragging files between devices
  • Nearby devices repeatedly connecting and disconnecting
  • Bluetooth or Wi-Fi problems causing retries

What to do

  1. 1Wait if you're actively using Universal Control
  2. 2If you don't use it, turn it off in System Settings > Displays > Advanced
  3. 3Turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on
  4. 4Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

It relaunches; any active Universal Control connection will drop.
