By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Handles communication between your Mac and connected iPhones or iPads over USB or Wi-Fi.

usbmuxd manages communication between macOS and iOS devices, over USB cables or Wi-Fi. Finder syncing, backups, Xcode and other tools that talk to an iPhone or iPad use it. It starts at boot and is normally idle.

Why is usbmuxd using so much CPU or memory?

  • Syncing or backing up an iPhone or iPad
  • Xcode installing or debugging apps on a device
  • A flaky cable causing repeated reconnections

What to do

  1. 1Let syncing or backup finish
  2. 2Try another cable or port if the device keeps reconnecting
  3. 3Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; connected iPhones or iPads disconnect briefly.
