What is VDCAssistant on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Lets apps capture video from the FaceTime camera or USB webcams.

VDCAssistant supports video capture from some built-in FaceTime cameras and external USB webcams, and allows several apps to use the same camera at once. It's active while an app is using the camera. When the camera is in use, macOS shows the green camera light and a camera indicator in the menu bar.

Why is VDCAssistant using so much CPU or memory?

  • A video call or camera app in use
  • An app keeping the camera open in the background

What to do

  1. 1Check which app is using the camera (look for the camera indicator in the menu bar or Control Center)
  2. 2Quit that app if you're not using it
  3. 3Review camera access in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it when needed; the camera stops working in open apps until then.
