What is configd on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Keeps track of network and system configuration and tells apps when it changes.

configd is the System Configuration daemon. It tracks the current state of things like network interfaces, IP addresses, DNS settings and the computer name, applies changes, and notifies apps when something changes, for example when you switch Wi-Fi networks. It's essential and normally very light.

Why is configd using so much CPU or memory?

  • Network changes happening often: flaky Wi-Fi, VPNs connecting and disconnecting
  • Many network interfaces from VPNs, virtual machines or docks
  • A network tool repeatedly changing settings

What to do

  1. 1Check whether Wi-Fi or a VPN keeps dropping and reconnecting
  2. 2Disconnect VPN or virtual-machine software temporarily to compare
  3. 3Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? No.

Don't quit it: networking depends on it, and macOS relaunches it anyway.
