What is deleted on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Frees up 'purgeable' disk space by asking apps to clear caches when storage runs low.

deleted manages purgeable space: caches and other data macOS can safely remove when needed. When your disk gets low on space, deleted asks registered services to clear what they can. It's not deleting your files. It's normal for it to be busy when storage is nearly full.

Why is deleted using so much CPU or memory?

  • Your disk is nearly full
  • A large download or app install needs space
  • Clearing caches after a macOS update

What to do

  1. 1Free up space: check System Settings > General > Storage
  2. 2Empty the Trash and remove large files you don't need
  3. 3Wait for it to finish; restart if it stays busy

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; freeing space may be delayed.
