What is nehelper on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Manages settings for VPNs, content filters and other Network Extension apps.

nehelper is part of Apple's Network Extension framework, used by VPN apps, content filters, firewalls and DNS tools. It hands out and applies their network configurations. If you don't use such apps it does very little.

Why is nehelper using so much CPU or memory?

  • A VPN or filter app repeatedly changing its configuration
  • Connecting and disconnecting VPNs
  • Several network-filtering apps installed at once

What to do

  1. 1Check VPN and filter apps in System Settings > Network and > VPN
  2. 2Disconnect or quit VPN and filter apps to compare
  3. 3Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; VPNs and filters may briefly disconnect.
