What is ReportCrash on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Writes a crash report whenever an app or background process crashes.

ReportCrash runs automatically when something crashes. It examines the crashed process and saves a crash report, which developers (and Apple, if you share analytics) use to fix bugs. Reports are saved in Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and can be viewed in the Console app. Seeing it busy means something is crashing, often repeatedly.

Why is ReportCrash using so much CPU or memory?

  • An app or background service crashing over and over
  • A large app crashing, which takes longer to analyse
  • Several crashes at once after an update

What to do

  1. 1Open the Console app and look under Crash Reports to see which app is crashing
  2. 2Update or reinstall that app, or quit it if it's not needed
  3. 3Restart your Mac
  4. 4If an Apple process keeps crashing, install the latest macOS update

Safe to quit? With care.

Quitting stops the current report but doesn't fix the crashing app; it will run again at the next crash.
