What is swift-frontend on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

The Swift compiler. Many copies run at once while Xcode or SwiftPM builds your code.

swift-frontend is the Swift compiler. During a build, Xcode or the Swift Package Manager runs many copies in parallel, one per group of files, to use all your CPU cores. It's normal to see high CPU and memory from several of them during builds; they exit when the build finishes.

Why is swift-frontend using so much CPU or memory?

  • Building Swift code, especially clean builds
  • Complex code that is slow to type-check
  • Building large dependencies or packages

What to do

  1. 1Let the build finish
  2. 2If builds are slow, look for slow-to-compile code in Xcode's build report
  3. 3Stop the build in Xcode if you started it by mistake

Safe to quit? With care.

Quitting one makes the current build fail; nothing else is affected.
