What is XCBBuildService / SWBBuildService on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Xcode's build system service, which plans and runs your project's builds.

XCBBuildService is the service that runs Xcode's build system; newer toolchains include SWBBuildService, from Apple's open-source Swift Build. It works out what needs to be compiled and launches the compilers and other tools. It's active while building or while Xcode prepares build information for indexing.

Why is XCBBuildService / SWBBuildService using so much CPU or memory?

  • Building a project, especially the first or a clean build
  • Large projects with many targets or packages
  • Xcode preparing build information for indexing

What to do

  1. 1Let the build finish
  2. 2Close other projects open in Xcode
  3. 3Quit and reopen Xcode if it stays busy after builds end
  4. 4Delete Derived Data if builds keep misbehaving

Safe to quit? With care.

Any build in progress fails; Xcode starts it again for the next build.
