What is triald on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Downloads and manages Apple's 'Trial' data, used for system experiments and machine learning.

triald is part of Apple's Trial system, which delivers experiments and related data, largely associated with machine-learning features, to Apple devices. Apple documents it very little. It can store data in your user Library's Trial folder and occasionally use CPU or disk while processing downloads. It's a genuine part of macOS.

Why is triald using so much CPU or memory?

  • Processing newly downloaded trial data
  • After a macOS update
  • Rebuilding its data after the Trial folder changed

What to do

  1. 1Wait; activity is usually temporary
  2. 2Restart your Mac if it stays busy
  3. 3Don't delete its folders by hand; it will simply rebuild them and get busy again

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; there's no benefit in quitting it.
