What is apsd on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Keeps a connection to Apple's push notification service so apps get messages instantly.

apsd is the Apple Push Notification service daemon. It keeps one efficient connection open to Apple's servers so that messages, notifications and iCloud changes can be pushed to your Mac right away, instead of every app checking constantly. Having it connected to Apple's servers is normal.

Why is apsd using so much CPU or memory?

  • Lots of incoming pushes (messages, iCloud changes)
  • An unreliable network causing reconnects
  • Firewalls or VPNs blocking Apple's push servers

What to do

  1. 1Check your network connection
  2. 2Temporarily disconnect VPNs or filters to compare
  3. 3Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; notifications and messages may arrive late until it reconnects.
