What is CoreSimulatorService on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Manages Xcode's simulated devices and their system images in the background.

CoreSimulatorService manages simulated devices for Xcode and the Simulator app: creating, booting and shutting them down. simdiskimaged mounts the simulator runtime disk images. They can stay running after you close Xcode, which is normal.

Why is CoreSimulatorService using so much CPU or memory?

  • Booting or creating simulated devices
  • Installing or updating simulator runtimes
  • Xcode querying devices at launch

What to do

  1. 1Let simulator runtime downloads finish
  2. 2Delete simulator runtimes you don't need in Xcode Settings > Components
  3. 3Restart your Mac if it stays busy

Safe to quit? With care.

Running simulators stop; it restarts when Xcode needs it.
