What is Simulator on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Xcode's Simulator app, which runs virtual iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices.

Simulator runs simulated Apple devices on your Mac so developers can test apps. Each booted simulated device runs its own set of background processes, so usage grows with the number of devices running. It's normal for a booted simulator to use noticeable resources.

What to do

  1. 1Shut down simulated devices you aren't using (File > Close or Device > Shut Down)
  2. 2Quit Simulator when you're done testing
  3. 3Erase a misbehaving device via Device > Erase All Content and Settings
