What is sandboxd on Mac?

By Junaid, maker of Taskglass · Last reviewed

Supports the app sandbox, which limits what apps can access, and logs blocked attempts.

sandboxd performs services for the macOS sandbox, the security boundary that limits what apps and system services can touch. It notably reports when something tries to do what its sandbox doesn't allow. Busy periods usually mean some app keeps bumping into its limits.

Why is sandboxd using so much CPU or memory?

  • An app repeatedly trying to access something it isn't allowed to
  • Lots of sandbox violations being logged after an update

What to do

  1. 1Look in the Console app for 'Sandbox' messages to see which app is involved
  2. 2Update or restart that app
  3. 3Restart your Mac

Safe to quit? With care.

macOS relaunches it; there's no benefit in quitting it.
